Speed to Lead: Why the First Hour Decides Who Gets the Job
A lead answered within an hour books at 31%. After 24 hours it's 15%. Here's what that means during storm season, and how automation closes the gap without hiring.

You can run perfect ads and still lose half your leads in the first hour. The homeowner with a leaking roof calls you, gets voicemail, and calls the next number. By the time you call back, they've booked an estimate with someone else.
31% → 15%Booking rate for Local Services Ads leads answered within one hour versus after 24 hours. Roofing benchmarks show fast follow-up converting 8 to 10 times better than delayed follow-up.
Storm season makes it worse
When a hail storm hits, every roofer's phone rings at once, and every roofer's office is already on the phone. The leads you paid the most for arrive in the exact hour you're least able to answer them. Google notices too: Local Services Ads ranks partly on responsiveness, so slow answers cost you rank and raise your cost per lead at the same time.
What "fast" actually looks like
Missed-call text-back. The moment a call goes unanswered, the caller gets a text: who you are, that you saw the call, a link to book. Most reply, and now the conversation is yours instead of your competitor's.
Instant form reply. A website or landing page form triggers a response in seconds, not the next morning.
An AI booking assistant. Answers the common questions, qualifies the job, and schedules the estimate around your real calendar. It hands anything complicated to a person, and it works at 2 a.m.
Review requests after every job. The same system that answers the lead asks for the review, which feeds the LSA rank that made the lead cheap in the first place.
The math
Take a roofer spending $5,000 a month at $95 a lead: about 53 leads. Answered slowly, 15% book, which is eight jobs. Answered inside the hour, 31% book, which is sixteen. Same ad spend, twice the booked jobs, and the difference is entirely in the first sixty minutes.
For Stamp Electric in Maryland, tightly structured search campaigns produced 28 phone-call leads in 18 days at $42 each. The campaigns did their job. What turned those calls into customers was that someone, or something, answered.
